Gardening - Mike and Katy Evans (September 2009)

We had a great time this past Sunday at the gardening workshop, led by Mike and Katy. Activities included a brief lecture about gardening basics: where to put your bed, how to prepare your soil, what to plant and when, and tips on composting (see handouts below). Much of what Mike and Katy showed us came from Mike's job at Urban Roots, which is a "youth development program that uses sustainable agriculture as a means to transform the lives of young people and increase the access of healthy food in Austin." The produce the program generations gets donated to hunger relief organizations and is also sold at farmers' markets and farm stands here in Austin. From January to June, Urban Roots needs adult volunteers on the farm to help plant and harvest. You can find out more about Urban Roots here.

  2. Great class! Great post! Thanks for putting it all together. Does anyone remember where Katy and Mike said we can purchase seeds in bulk? Or the name of the gardening store that is a bit more expensive, but has excellent products?
